Chalkyitsik Airport Improvements

Subsidiary: Brice Inc.
Client: Alaska Department of Transportation
Contract Value: $23.6M
Location: Chalkyitsik, AK
Dates: September 2023 – October 2025 (expected)
This FAA-funded $23.6 Million project reconstructed the airport surfaces to meet current requirements for rural airports and the size of aircraft. Inaccessible by large barge, all of the equipment for the project was disassembled and flown in, then reassembled onsite, proving to be a feat of logistics and strategic planning.
Brice developed a new material site from raw land in Chalkyitsik to produce all borrow, subbase, and CASC needed for the project. Brice excavated unsuitable material along the shoulders, balanced the runway with Borrow and placed new Crushed Aggregate Surface Course (CASC) materials on the runway, taxiway and apron surfaces. Brice constructed a subgrade cooling system foundation for a new SREB, constructed a new segmented circle, replaced two wind cones, and replaced all airport electrical to conform to new requirements and meet pilot navigational needs.
